Treating Head Lice

Treating head lice (Q1): Home remedy for head lice?

My daughter came home today with head lice. Does anyone know any good home remedies for getting rid of these things? I hate putting chemicals on my child.

I have heard about mayonaise and olive oil has anyone had success with these? Can you offer any other suggestions?

The only natural cure for head lice known to work is TEA TREE OIL. You could use a good shampoo with high tea tree oil content. You could also put 10-15% of this oil in a spray bottle (15 ml +85 ml water) shake well and spray the scalp with it till saturated. Leave for 20 minutes then wash with the tea tree oil shampoo.

Do it daily and use a fine-tooth metal comb to get rid of the nits after washing. There are also products containing promethrin which is made from a plant but considered more drastic than the oil. Both work

My daughter had lice and I kept using expensive chemicals to no avail...I tried Mayo saturating her head and then put a shower cap on her and she wore this for about 6 hours and then I combed her hair with a lice comb and washed her hair and she has never has lice again.

The Robicomb is supposed to be wonderful. You buy it in the drugstore and it kills the lice electronically and painlessly. Mayonnaise is terrible! We had this in our hair once for an initiation and it makes your hair greasy for weeks. You can try just regular conditioner and leave it in. Comb the lice out. It smothers them or something. It just takes a while.

Soak hair and scalp in vinegar for 15 minutes and comb out the nits

Baby Oil or Mineral Oil. Soak your hair in it for 10 minutes. Lice are a species of the mite family that breath through their bodies. The baby oil literally suffocates them and they die. This remedy also works on mites on cats/dogs

You really should go to the drug store and talk to a pharmasist. There's alot more to getting rid of lice than treating your hair. You gotta wash all bedding and pillows and stuffed toys and vaccum your car seat headrest and dry items in the dryer on high etc. Not to mention you have to use a special product and a special comb to remove the lice and "nits".

You can use vinegar I think to come through hair and get rid of lice and nits-the acid is suppose to kil them. I wouldn't mess around though. I'd just go to the drug store. RID can be bought at a drug store and not only gives you thorough instructions but also can protect hair for up to 2wks from reinfestation.

Treating head lice (Q3): Best treatment for head lice?

Can anyone tell me what is the best treatment for head lice?

(reply by trouble)
A simple one is using dawn dish detergent... you've got to saturate all the hair in dawn and then put a shower cap or a plastic bag over the hair for at least 20-30 mins... and then rinse out and use a lice comb

There are shampoos available at your local pharmacy for head lice like Rid, Nix or Kwell. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully since they have ingredients that are common in garden/farm pesticides. You can perhaps ask for herbal head lice shampoos which are less toxic when used or prepare your own.

Treating head lice (Q4): What is the best home remedy for head lice?

We noticed a few on my 8 year old son's head/crown & I treated him with the OTC treatment, but I need to re-treat in 7 days. This is the first time he has ever had this but the chemicals seemed to irritate his head/neck. Any home remedies?

My stepdaughter constantly got head lice from school, I was told by someone 90% rubbing alcohol, it worked!!! Lots cheaper too, but I still stripped beds, sprayed car, mattresses, carpet, etc.

hair salad! you mix olive oil and vinegar and put it on the hair, wrap it in plastic wrap and leave it for a few hours or overnight. also, did you use rid? when i was a kid i got head lice once, and i think it was rid that we used that irritated my scalp, and we ended up using another brand, i don't remember what, that had a different active ingredient. but hair salad works great as well! good luck

Tea-tree oil shampoo - but make sure you get a ‘natural' brand that is Laurel Sulphate free!

Treating head lice (Q5): Sure fire treatment for head lice?

My younger sister has beautiful long blonde hair and we really don't want to cut her hair. Is there any treatments or old remedies that works 100% of the time in getting rid of head lice.

Product called RID, and a blow dryer. Apply the rid, saturate the hair, use the blow dryer on high setting, the heat and the RID will kill the adults and the eggs. Then shampoo and condition.

I just had 2 kids placed here (we do foster care), and of course they came with head lice. I have NIX on hand, just for this type of situation. You shampoo with a good amount and sit with it for a full 10 minutes in your hair, you have to use the gel to comb it out, and also a very big thing that people forget, you have to get the spray and spray the car seats, chairs, all furniture, or you will continue to reinfest, and yes, also have to wash all linens, clothes and anything that comes in contact with the lice, and you use hot water and bleach, then dry in a hot dryer.

Also remember to re-treat the head 7 days later, to get any eggs or lice that have developed, its always 2 treatments within 7 days, many do not do this.
