Wanda there is no guarantees for anything to keep you free of head lice. It has to be traced back to the source. If you treat it you have to do bedding, and the whole house and family. They have sprays for furniture, and rugs. You can put Mayonnaise in the hair and keep it bagged, but it’s a mess.
Robi has a comb that you put batteries in and when you run it through the hair it saps them. But you must make sure you get all the nits and eggs. Usually they love the nape of the neck and around the ears. They attach themselves about 1 to 1 and 1/2 from the scalp, but can also attach on the hair shaft anywhere.
They're a pain in the a–! for sure. They also have a treatment called not so nice to lice. It is suppose to be kinder so to speak. You have to be careful with the treatments with kid as it can cause a sever reaction and cause death. Don’t treat kids too soon between treatments. I am a barber, beautician, and have had my share with my granddaughter coming home from school with them.
It seems a there isn’t a year that the schools aren’t full of them. If kids clothing comes in to contact with others that have them you’ll have them again. You can spot them pretty easy when you sit the person your examining under a black light in a dark room, because they shine up. Years ago they used to use kerosene. Hope this has been of use. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
Natural remedies for head lice (Q2): Neem for head lice treatment?
One of my best gal pals is in tears because she can't seem to stop the head lice from coming back on her daughter. She has done the Rid and Nix - the doctor suggested Lindane prescription stuff. I told her Oh no don't do that.... I have heard of Neem. I have been reading about it - and I wonder if anyone has used it for killing head lice?

Neem oil along with tulsi, manjistha, and kutaj oils will be an excellent remedy. Apply every alternate day for a month. You will actually notice the lice running away from the scalp

I haven’t used it for lice, but I use it for other things. It is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. It can’t hurt to try, and it will do no harm. Those other chemicals are dangerour if overused. I seem to remember that you can use enzyme spray on dogs and cats for fleas, perhaps that would work for lice too?
One thing to remember is to bag all stuffed animals for at least two weeks and to put anything you can into the dryer on high heat. Heat kills lice. Also using a hair dryer on hair is supposed to keep the eggs from hatching.

Put a ton of real mayo in your hair (not Miricle whip, mayo) then put a shower cap on. Do this for every person in the house have it on for at least 2 hours. Then wash all the bed linen in hot water, what you can’t wash put in a garabage bag for at least a week. Vaccum the house and all the beds, couches and chairs.
Wash the mayo out with regular shampoo. Take a lice comb and go through everyone’s hair carefully combing out the eggs and dead lice.
The next day, go through the hair again and check for more eggs.
Check again 3 days later to make sure there are no new eggs. If there are new eggs, retreat again with the mayo and shower cap.
My child care provider did this and it worked great. The mayo sufficates the head lice and makes the eggs real easy to slide off the hair. It’s time consuming but you don’t have to deal with those horrible chemical shampoos.
Natural remedies for head lice (Q4): Head lice home remedies?

Been there, done that!
Stay away from commercial chemical treatments! I have known they are bad for years, but just this past week met a parent whose daughter is suffering from permanent nerve damage as a result of using one of the commercial chemical formulas and finding out too late that it contains a potent pesticide - with guess which side effect!
Check out this website: sierraclub.ca/national/programs/health-environment/pesticides/head-lice-fact-sheet.pdf It gives 2 Non-Toxic treatment options. I can tell you that I have done #1 a couple of years in a row and it works.
The white vinegar, supposedly, helps loosen the glue that the lice use to affix the nit to the hair strand.
Olive oil, subsitutable with coconut oil, contains an enzyme that softens the shell of living lice so that if you miss them, they will end up dying. It is also thick enough that it plugs the air holes of the more mature nit (due to the life cycle of the nit, this is why you have to do at least 2 treatments in the first week and a 3rd at the end of the second week for good measure)
The essential oils (the combination is best, but if you can only go with one oil use Tea Tree) irritate the lice and repel many of the survivors.
Make sure you comb through the hair with a nit comb while the oil is on and again after you have washed out the hair. I find using dish soap to wash the hair was better at getting out the heavy oil.
I regularly mix rosemary, lavender, tea tree and water in a spray bottle and mist my kids hair, before they leave the house and again in the evening, during outbreaks in the community. Use this mix to dampen the kids hair between treatments and comb through at least once a day with a nit comb.
When you wash the bedding and such, add 10-15 drops of tea tree oil to the load.
If your family is prone to getting lice, add tea tree oil to your regular shampoo during lice season, as a preventative measure. Put a few drops of tea tree or lavender oil on the neck of your kids jackets and in their hoods and hats.
Remember, lice prefer sweet, clean heads, so it’s rather a back handed compliment to get them!

My 9 year old had lice this past summer and I tried everything! In the end I used Cetaphil face lotion and really saturated her hair with it. I used enough that her hair was all white. I put on a shower cap then covered it with a bandana. I left it on over night then used a nit comb in the morning. I also bought all new pillows for everybodys bed and washed everything. The lotion did the trick (after trying over the counter remedies 4 times!) and we have been lice free. Knock on wood
