How to Get Rid Of Head Lice

How to get rid of head lice (Q1): Is there a home remedy for head lice?

I have 3 girls and I found lice in two of my girls' heads but I treated all of our heads... I have done the rid, I have spent countless hours with conditioner and the nit metal comb, I have washed and thrown out a lot of things that I thought the lice may be on. I thought they were gone and I found a small lice bug in one of my daughters head again like it was a newly hatched lice.

I am so desperate to get rid of this - not to mention my kids are so tired of me picking in their heads. I spend hours and hours on their heads we all have long thick curly hair and I really am trying to avoid cutting their hair. but I will.. I have spent so much money on rid, combs and conditioners please tell me of any remedy that I havent listed here that actually worked! for good!

Please I am desperate! I can't take this anymore its horrible and gross! I thought the lice couldn't live if it wasnt feeding on a human head? does anyone know if blowdrying or flat ironing the hair would help? maybe burn them up

Actually, there were some articles out a few days ago about a scientist that was using hot air to dry the lice out and kill them. I don’t know the details, but it sounded interesting.

The trouble with lice is the eggs. You an think you’ve gotten all the little buggers, then a few more eggs hatch, and you’re starting all over again. All the bedding, clothes, hats are suspected carriers of eggs, as well as pets (especially birds). A good washing of everything should take care of them, but it’ll likely require repeated washings, as it’s so difficult to get them all in one shot, as you well know from trying to get them out of your girl’s hair.

Even with the hot air, or the insecticides, you may be forced to cut their hair to eliminate all the possibilities.

How to get rid of head lice (Q2): Are there any other method to kill head lice?

My daughter has severe head lice. We have used every single lice treatment, the sprays, washed everything in hot water, vacuumed, and tried the half vinegar and half rubbing alcohol thing. When it finally seems like Im getting somewhere, there they are again! I am going crazy! Please help me! We even had to cut 12 inches of her long beautiful hair, which is a mothers nightmare! could they be immune to the treatments? I just dont understand where they are coming from!

Have you disinfected all her combs, hairpins, clips, scarfs, head wear, etc? Is there any other place where she lays her head, such as a couch, a certain pillow, blanket? You are missing something that she is coming into contact with. The parasites are easily killed, but you have to get all of them or the cycle starts over again.

Does she spend any time out of the house at a friends house? Perhaps she is getting reinfected elsewhere. Have you disinfected all her combs, hairpins, clips, scarfs, head wear, etc? Is there any other place where she lays her head, such as a couch, a certain pillow, blanket?

My son (6) got them from school and I used Rid-didnt work. Then I tried mayonnaise left on two hours and that worked pretty good. Also rinsing hair in full strength vinegar after school. I have also heard that coconut oil works, peppermint oil, using high heat on hair dryer more than 5 min, flat iron near scalp, hair dye works or bleach. I used the mayo and then vinegar and it worked. Make sure to check and recheck the head daily and get any eggs out. Let me know if any of those work

I have found that using hartz flea and tick shampoo works better than rid and medicated shampoos. I had lots of trouble when my girls were little. An old lady suggested the dog shampoo and I figured what the heck nothing has worked. That was the end of head lice at our house. Shampoo once and repeat a week later

A lot of lice are immune to Nix and Rid. What I do is to soak the scalp and hair with rubbing alcohol. Don't get it in the eyes. After that, rinse and shampoo with regular shampoo. You also need a good lice comb, such as the Lice Meister. You will need to tumble dry all the bedding, boil the combs, hair barrettes, and brushes, bag or tumble dry all stuffed animals, and spray all the upholstered furniture with lice-killing spray. Also, you should vacuum.

We used the NitFree brand of natural lice solutions which includes a great comb and some mousse that loosens the nits from the hair shaft.
Much better than dumping chemicals on my daughters head and worked very well, especially since alot of lice are becoming immune to the chemcials in traditional shampoos. If whatever you decided to do has not worked you may want to look into NitFree.

How to get rid of head lice (Q3): Still itches after using lice treatment?

Me and my cousin cought lice from our friend who had it, and we did the treatment, she did hers about 5 hours ago and i just did mine like 30 mins ago, and she said her head is itching again, but we do both have dandruff and stuff

You still need to keep checking for nits & remove them. Wash everything you’ve used (pillows, linens, hairbrushes, etc. in HOT water.

Things that aren’t washable or difficult to wash, spray them w/special spray that you can buy at any dept store or drugstore. (Like the upholstery of your car, etc) May also need to use 2nd treatment.
